As the small business owner and marketing consultant behind Crafty Penguin, staying ahead of digital marketing trends isn’t just interesting, it’s essential for supporting other small businesses with practical, people-first marketing.

2026 Digital Marketing Trends

I recently attended a DMI webinar focused on 2026 digital marketing trends, and it offered valuable insight into how AI, automation and changing consumer behaviour will shape the way we market over the next few years.

Below are my key takeaways, and what they mean for small businesses looking to build sustainable, effective marketing strategies.

AI in Marketing: Powerful Tools, Human-Led Strategy

There’s no denying that AI is becoming more deeply embedded across marketing. From AI generated video and ad creatives to automated targeting and budget allocation, the tools available to us are advancing at speed.

However, one of the strongest messages from the session was that AI should be treated as a tool, not a replacement. Human oversight, strategic thinking and brand judgement remain critical. As marketers, we also need to be transparent about when AI is used and ensure quality doesn’t slip into what’s now being referred to as “AI slop”, this is low-quality, mass produced content that adds little value.

For small businesses in particular, this presents a real opportunity. You don’t need to compete on volume or big budgets; you can compete on clarity, creativity and authenticity, supported by smart use of AI tools.

Community Marketing Over Follower Counts

Another clear shift is the move towards community first platforms. Spaces like Reddit, Discord, and WhatsApp groups along with broadcast channels are growing because people want real conversations with real people.

The takeaway here is simple: a smaller, highly engaged audience is often more valuable than a large, passive one, especially for local and service-based businesses. For small brands, this is good news. Building genuine relationships, showing up consistently and being less corporate in tone can have a far greater impact than chasing vanity metrics.

Authentic Content Builds Trust and Brand Connection

Despite all the advances in AI, honest human content continues to outperform highly polished, synthetic alternatives. Founder-led content, behind-the-scenes posts and employee advocacy help build trust and connection. Whish is why you'll notice I post on platforms like LinkedIn and the reason for these blog posts.

As a small business owner and consultant, this really resonated with me. Showing the person behind the brand isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength. In an increasingly automated digital landscape, being visibly human is a differentiator. I like to share my face and the person behind Crafty Penguin so you know who you are working with.

SEO Is Evolving: From Clicks to Visibility

Search behaviour is evolving quickly, with more users getting answers directly from AI generated results and fewer clicks through to websites. This is reshaping SEO for small businesses and service providers. This means brands need to think beyond traditional SEO.

The focus is shifting towards:

  • Clear, well-structured content

  • Direct answers early in the page

  • Credible statistics and real-world insight

  • A consistent and recognisable brand voice

For small businesses, this reinforces the importance of being clear about who you are, what you stand for and how your marketing and brand voice set you apart from competitors.

Marketing Automation Needs Strategic Direction

Advertising automation will continue to increase, with AI handling much of the optimisation behind the scenes. However, creative direction, intent and first-party data remain firmly in the hands of marketers.

This is where small businesses can really focus their efforts: understanding their audience, using first-party data effectively, experimenting thoughtfully with AI marketing tools and making strategic decisions that align with their brand values and business goals.

Final Thoughts: Practical Marketing for Small Businesses

My biggest takeaway from this webinar is that the future of digital marketing isn’t about choosing between AI and human. It’s about using AI to support better, more human marketing.

For small businesses, the opportunity lies in combining smart experimentation with authenticity, strong brand voice and meaningful connection. Those who get that balance right will be best placed for sustainable growth in 2026 and beyond.

If you’d like support navigating these changes or applying them to your own marketing strategy, Crafty Penguin offers tailored marketing consultancy and creative support designed specifically for small businesses.
