Case Study: Sunnyside Soup Kitchen
Logo Design for a Non-Profit Organisation
Project
Logo Design and Brand Visual Development for Sunnyside Soup Kitchen
Client & Brief
I had the opportunity to create a professional logo design for Sunnyside Soup Kitchen, a non-profit organisation based in South Africa focused on supporting people facing hunger and homelessness.
The charity had previously been using a temporary logo created in Canva but wanted a more polished and distinctive visual identity for use across their website and communications. The aim was to develop a logo that felt welcoming, meaningful, and representative of the organisation’s mission and values.
As a freelance marketing consultant and designer, I managed the design process personally, ensuring the final logo balanced professionalism with warmth and community-focused storytelling.

The Challenge
This project required a logo that would:
-
Reflect the charity’s compassionate and community-driven mission
-
Create a more professional identity than the temporary existing logo
-
Maintain consistency with the charity’s pre-selected colour palette and typography
-
Feel approachable, supportive, and visually welcoming
-
Work effectively across both digital and print applications.
The challenge was creating a logo that balanced simplicity and professionalism while still communicating care, support, and human connection.
Strategy
My approach focused on combining thoughtful symbolism with clean, professional branding design:
-
Purpose-led design: I explored imagery connected to care, support, and nourishment to visually communicate the charity’s mission.
-
Consistency with existing branding: The organisation had already selected a green colour palette and font style which were important to retain for continuity across their website and communications.
-
Symbolic storytelling: The concept evolved from a simple hand and bowl into two supporting hands holding a bowl, representing community, compassion, and collective support.
-
Warm and approachable visuals: Additional colour and shading were introduced to give the logo more depth and personality while maintaining a clean and professional finish.
Managing the project myself allowed me to keep the visual direction aligned with the organisation’s goals while ensuring the final identity felt authentic and meaningful.
Execution
-
Designed the logo using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
-
Developed multiple concept sketches and refinements throughout the design process.
-
Created scalable vector artwork suitable for both digital and printed applications.
-
Applied colour, shading, and refinement techniques to enhance warmth and visual depth.
-
Produced presentation mock-ups to demonstrate how the branding would appear across different materials.
Deliverables included:
-
Professional logo design
-
Vector artwork for scalable use
-
Branding mock-ups for digital and print applications
-
Visual identity suitable for website and promotional materials

Outcome
The final logo provided Sunnyside Soup Kitchen with a more professional and cohesive visual identity that better reflected the organisation’s mission and values.
The project demonstrated how thoughtful branding can help non-profit organisations communicate trust, compassion, and professionalism while strengthening their overall presence.
The client’s feedback highlighted the emotional impact of the project and the importance of design in supporting charitable work internationally.
