Case Study: MK Theatricals
Logo and DVD Cover Design
Project
Brand Identity and Promotional Visuals for Local Theatre Company
Client & Brief
MK Theatricals is a local theatre group passionate about live performance, drama and storytelling. They approached me as a freelance marketing consultant and designer to create:
-
A distinctive logo that captured the spirit of their company
-
A DVD cover design for one of their productions (Beauty and the Beast) using provided visual assets
The intention was to give the brand a memorable identity and cohesive promotional material that reflected the group’s personality and creative energy.

The Challenge
This project required a solution that would:
-
Visually embody the essence of theatre - passion, drama, performance
-
Be versatile enough for branding, digital use and print
-
Stand out while fitting the identity of a community‑centred performance group
The challenge was translating theatre inspired emotion into clear, engaging visual design that could be used across different formats without losing impact.
Strategy
My freelance approach blended creative thinking with strategic purpose:
-
Audience and brand alignment: Designed a logo rooted in traditional theatrical elements to resonate with the group’s audience and reflect their artistic heritage.
-
Colour psychology: Bold use of red, a colour associated with energy, passion and drama, to make the brand instantly recognisable.
-
Print and digital readiness: Created scalable vector artwork that works equally well on screens, merchandise and printed materials.
-
Narrative consistency: Ensured the DVD cover design flowed from the existing visual assets and matched the tone of the production.
Managing the design strategy and execution personally as a freelancer meant the project stayed cohesive and aligned with the client’s vision from start to finish.

Execution
-
Designed the logo in Adobe Illustrator for precision and scalability.
-
Used Adobe Photoshop to refine visual elements and prepare print‑ready files.
-
Created mobile mock‑ups and graphics to show how the logo would appear in digital use.
-
Designed the DVD cover layout, integrating the production’s images and story synopsis and choosing fonts and colours that complemented the existing design.
Deliverables included:
-
A bespoke, theatre‑inspired logo that reflects the brand’s personality.
-
A fully designed DVD cover for Beauty and the Beast that balanced imagery, colour and content.
-
Mock‑ups to show digital and practical applications of the visual identity.

Outcome
The finished logo gave MK Theatricals a dynamic and recognisable identity that matched their creative ambitions, while the DVD cover design provided a polished promotional piece for their production. The bold design choices helped convey the energy and excitement of theatre to both cast members and audiences.

“Thank you to Louise at Crafty Penguin for the beautiful DVD cover design work, its absolutely stunning, and also for doing previous design work for us, including the creation of our very own theatre company logo.”
