It’s all marketing – even the parts we don’t label as marketing

At Crafty Penguin, I believe marketing works best when it’s rooted in confidence, clarity and real human connection, not just tactics and trends. That’s why books like Life in Business resonate so strongly with how we support small businesses and individuals.

If you’re building a brand and want marketing that feels authentic, sustainable and aligned with who you are, this reflection might feel familiar.

I’ve just finished reading Life in Business by Libby Langley, and it’s one of those books that quietly stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page.

I recently met Libby at a Growth Community networking event and discovered she’d written a book. As someone who’s always looking to learn, develop and challenge my thinking, I didn’t hesitate to buy it. That curiosity and commitment to learning is something I’ve carried with me throughout my career, and it plays a huge role in how I approach marketing today.

What I didn’t expect was just how human this book would feel.

A refreshingly human take on business

Life in Business is incredibly easy to read, but don’t mistake that for being lightweight. It speaks honestly about the realities of running a business, building confidence, and showing up as yourself, without separating who you are as a person from what you do professionally.

As marketers, we often talk about authenticity, personal brand and connection. This book captures those ideas without jargon or buzzwords. It reminds you that business isn’t just about strategies, funnels or perfectly polished content, it’s about people.

That’s what makes it so powerful.

“It’s all marketing”, a mindset shift worth remembering.

One section of the book that really stood out to me was the idea that it’s all marketing.

Not just the obvious things like:

  • Social media

  • Websites

  • Podcasts

But also the parts that often get overlooked:

  • Talking to people

  • Joining in

  • Having fun

  • Living your life

As a marketer, this really resonated. Marketing doesn’t just happen online or in campaigns. It happens in conversations, in relationships, in how you show up and interact with others.

People don’t connect with perfectly curated brands, they connect with energy, honesty and real experiences. This is something I often encourage clients to remember, especially when they feel pressure to be ‘everywhere’ or to look perfect all the time.

“Do it anyway”, confidence over comfort

Another page that stayed with me was centred around a simple but powerful message: Do it anyway.

You’re going to inspire some people.

You’re going to annoy others.

And that’s inevitable.

Letting the fear of other people’s opinions hold you back doesn’t serve you, your confidence or your business. As marketers, we see this all the time, hesitation to post, to speak up, to share ideas or take up space.

This message felt like a reminder that growth rarely comes from playing it safe. Confidence isn’t about being fearless; it’s about acting even when doubt is present.

Why this matters for marketers and small business owners.

From a marketing perspective, Life in Business reinforces something I strongly believe in: the most effective marketing starts from the inside out.

Confidence, clarity and consistency all shape how you communicate your brand. When you trust yourself and your values, your marketing becomes more natural, more sustainable and far more engaging.

For small business owners and entrepreneurs in particular, this book offers reassurance that you don’t need to do everything the ‘traditional’ way to succeed. Showing up as yourself isn’t a weakness, it’s often your biggest strength.

Final thoughts

I really enjoyed reading Life in Business, and I’d genuinely recommend it to anyone running a business, building a personal brand or working in marketing.

It’s an honest reminder that business is human, marketing is everywhere, and confidence is built through action.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply start and do it anyway.

If you’re looking for a book that blends life, business and marketing in a refreshingly real way, this is well worth your time.
